Will Burley look to Barnsley hero?

February 19th, 2008 | By: Ian Rose | No Comments »

According to the Mirror (and their ridiculous pun-filled headlines), the hero of Barnsley’s FA Cup win over Liverpool, Brian Howard, may be interested in a call up from Scotland. The Barnsley captain is certainly getting his share of attention this week after his 90th-minute winner at Anfield, but I was under the impression that the lad was English. It turns out his family is Scottish, and though he does have one under-20 cap for England, he could still side with the Scots for his senior international career. As a winger, he has to see his chances of getting game time just a bit better up North.

The way I see it, the more options Burley has to choose from, the better, and Howard can obviously step up in the big match. There aren’t a lot of pure wingers in the Scotland squad, and it may be our weakest position. In Howard, we have a relatively young player (he’s 25) who can play on both wings and is on good form in the Championship. I’m all for it, though obviously he’ll have to keep proving himself. A Cup win at home to Chelsea ought to do it.
