Brian Howard is English after all

March 12th, 2008 | By: Ian Rose | 2 Comments »

Well, so much for Scotland getting in on the Barnsley bandwagon. Tykes captain Brian Howard has been mentioned as a possible winger on George Burley’s squad against Croatia on March 26th, but as of today, he is officially ineligible for Scotland. We all knew that he played for England’s U-20 side, but since all of his appearances were in non-competitive matches, there was no problem with the switch to Scotland. Howard qualifies through his father, who is from Glasgow. But, it turns out on closer inspection that Howard also played for England at the U-16 level, and those were competitive matches.

So, that’s all you’ll hear about Brian Howard on this blog. Too bad, since winger is not a deep position for Scotland, but we’ll live. Appropriately, now that we know we can’t have him, he scored a hat trick this week. That’s life.
