Nacho for Scotland?

By: Ian Rose | October 27th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

It’s been a long silence for the Scotland WCB. Since that incredible miss which will never be mentioned again in this blog, I’ve been in a bit of a stupor, and frankly, have survived by burying myself in club matters. Still, this is a story that needs to be dealt with.

Nacho Novo (of Rangers) was born in Spain but has lived in Scotland for eight years, since signing for Raith Rovers. He loves Scotland, he has no intention of leaving, and now he claims that if he applied for British citizenship, was accepted, and was asked, he would play for Scotland.

Interesting. I honestly can’t decide how I feel about this. From a pure footballing standpoint, we could use him. He would help the cause, especially with the notable … hard to avoid the word betrayal here … difference of opinion … of Kris Boyd. Still, a naturalized player from outside of Britain is a pretty unknown thing in Scotland. Do we just admit that this is the way international football is now, and take him up on it, or do we stick to our guns, and possibly give up a chance at the big stage?

If I have to pick a side, I guess I land on the side of tired provincialism. Something about this doesn’t seem right. I don’t think that a player should ever be restricted from playing wherever his or her skills allow at the club level … but international football is different. It’s not just about citizenship – it’s about a shared heritage and history. If Nacho Novo truly thinks of himself as a Scot, rather than a Spaniard, perhaps this is alright, and to his credit, he has said that he wants to cause no trouble … he just wants a chance to play.

It’s hard to make this argument without sounding old-fashioned, but really, that’s what international football is – it’s old-fashioned. Maybe that’s why it’s so endangered. We’ll certainly keep an eye on where this ends up, and at any rate, for the offer, Nacho, thanks.

Scots score deal for Argentina friendly

By: Ian Rose | September 30th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

After months of negotiation, it’s finally done and dusted: On November 19, Argentina will come to Hampden Park in Glasgow and face the Scots in a friendly.
After relaxing their fantastically, ridiculously stupid demands (they originally wanted 100% of the gate and 100% of the TV income … why exactly would we do that?), the Argies have agreed to a somewhat ... [read]

Iceland 1-2 Scotland: An improvement, but only just

By: Ian Rose | September 10th, 2008 | No Comments »

There are positives, and there are negatives, from today’s second World Cup 2010 qualifier for Scotland. But the most important bits are also the positive ones – George Burley has his first win as Scotland manager, and we have three important road points. We managed a clean sheet from open play, and we scored two goals of our ... [read]

Macedonia 1-0 Scotland: A poor, poor start

By: Ian Rose | September 6th, 2008 | 8 Comments »

The Scots’ World Cup qualifying campaign started with a whimper rather than a bang today, as we went down 1-0 to Macedonia. It was frankly a deserved result for the Macedonians, who are turning out in recent years to be a bit of a super-minnow. This is the side that beat Croatia and drew with England in the ... [read]

Scotland 0-0 Northern Ireland

By: Ian Rose | August 20th, 2008 | 1 Comment »

We needed better. Before one of the most promising World Cup qualifying groups in decades gets underway next month, we needed to see something better from our boys today. The Irish should be content with the draw – it seems to have been their goal all along – but we should not. Job well done to Allan ... [read]

Scotland Team for NI Friendly

This is late, but better late than never, and so here’s George Burley’s squad for the last friendly before World Cup qualifiers begin, next Wednesday against Northern Ireland. There are some new faces, and some old favorites, and a few surprises, which is always good to see for a friendly before a big campaign. Burley has targeted 17 ... [read]

Scotland Slips to #17

By: Ian Rose | June 4th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

FIFA’s World Rankings are out today, and it’s another minor slip for the Scots, as we drop from 15th to 17th. The friendly loss to the Czechs didn’t help matters, but it really wasn’t a surprise. As much as we should still be happy to be up in the top 20 where we belong, the slow decline since ... [read]

Breaking Down the Loss

By: Ian Rose | May 30th, 2008 | No Comments »

As promised, here’s a bit deeper of a look at today’s 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic. There are some bright points, more in fact than a look at the scoreline might suggest, but a 3-1 loss is never a net positive, and so its time to break down what went wrong, and right, in George Burley’s first Scotland ...
