Souness is “hardest man” in football

January 8th, 2008 | By: Ian Rose | 3 Comments »

He has always been on the list of candidates for the Scotland manager position, but today, Graeme Souness has a new gold star on his resume, as The Sun has named him the all-time hardest man in the sport. Beating out such famous football tough guys as Roy Keane and Dave Mackay is no small task, but it may not be enough to muscle his way into an office at Hampden. As I reported over at the Scotland Offside, it appears that a very short list of four candidates has been drafted, and it is apparently topped by none other than Tommy Burns of Scotland and Celtic fame. Souness has never been a favorite of mine for the job, and so I eagerly await a more detailed leak on the contents of this short list, so I can more officially take him out of the running.

Regardless of his job future, good on Graeme for bringing the “hardest footballer” award home to Scotland, where it really belongs. And thanks to Laurie over at the Offside for spotting this one.

In terms of what we talked about earlier, Souness would be ideal for Scotland. He’s at the age where he’s had his time in the Premiership and would be ready to commit long term to Scotland.

The only problem is that he’s an absolutely dreadful manager.

Couldn’t agree more. Tommy Burns and Kenny Dalglish are both promising to me, but we’ll have to wait and see just a bit longer.

Agreed. Also, seems the Scottish FA know what they’re doing. The Berti Vogts experiment went a bit wrong but the last two appointments have been great. Surely they’ll look at Souness’s record (especially his man-management record) and think “no.”
