Scotland 2-1 Iceland

April 1st, 2009 | By: Ian Rose | 7 Comments »

Not much detail from me, because I’m at work, and it’s been one of those days. Luckily, despite the best efforts of a few of our defenders, the Scots had a much better day than I’m having. Congratulations to Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher on their first senior Scotland goals, and on Craig Gordon for his first competitive win in months.

Special thanks to Alan Hutton, who, like Gordon, hadn’t played in months. He looked like the Hutton of old, the Hutton that won the Scottish record sale to Spurs. His run to set McCormack up for the first goal was nothing short of brilliant. Welcome back, mate.

More on this later, but we’re back in second place in the group. We needed a win, and we got it.

Ian, there are only 8 teams that will qualify from the Euro group for the play offs. Do you think Scotland will be one of them ?
Please look at the points picked up by all the other second placed teams in the other groups.

yes but take into account that the other groups points against the bottom team in their group this would mean usually six points docked from every other team and then it gets alot closer but to be honest we should be sitting on 12 points right now not 7, always the hard way

Carlos – Right now, there’s hope, but it’s not in any way safe. If we beat Macedonia and Norway, or at least don’t lose either match, we’re in with a chance, but it’s going to be tight. We may end up needing a draw from the final match with Holland, which isn’t encouraging after our recent meeting.

Hmmmmm being a Dutchman I sure hope Holland have an off day as I have always considered Scotland my second team after 1978 (yeah I know everyone talks Archie Gemmel). By October Holland would have qualified and Hollands biggest motivator is NOT the game itself but to impress the coach to include them in the team. Scottish supporters are really the Cream of the Crop with their kilts and baggies – Love them, dont know a Dutchman who doesn’t?

What’s up with that whole Ferguson ‘V’ sign business, I don’t understand half of it.

What were the ‘V’ signs for (because they were benched and rebellious or something?)?

And now they’re banned for life? Isn’t that a little harsh?

V sign

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The V sign is a hand gesture in which the first and second fingers are raised and parted, whilst the remaining fingers are clenched. With palm inwards, in the United Kingdom and some other English speaking countries, it is an obscene insulting gesture of defiance.

OK, starting to make a little more sense now. :)

Sol – yeah, its basically the equivalent in some other countries of raising the middle finger to the pitch all game long. Each of the things (drinking/curfew and the V sign) wouldn’t have probably led to a ban, but together, yes. Barry is old enough at 31 that its not a huge loss, but I’m most disappointed in Alan McGregor, who was a solid backup for Gordon. I still much prefer Gordon there, but I liked having McGregor challenging him, especially with Gordon out of sorts at Sunderland.
