McManus accepts temporary captaincy

In the wake of Barry Ferguson’s injury and subsequent drop from the Scottish roster for tomorrow’s friendly with Croatia, Celtic skipper Stephen McManus will earn his first national captaincy. The 25-year-old Celtic defender is a good pick for my money, especially given his leadership experience at Parkhead. Ferguson will certainly get the armband back when he returns to the Scotland squad, but for now, McManus will enjoy the honor, saying today:

“… it’s a tremendous honour to lead your country, even if it’s for one game, five minutes or 10 minutes. It’s something that I will enjoy looking back at and it is something that no-one can take away from you.”

It’s good to see an Old Firm player treating the national side like more than just a hassle in the midst of a congested season. It should be an honor to play for your country, and an even greater one to lead them. He understands that, and I’m sure he’ll do well, even if it is only for one match.

On to tomorrow’s match. Even with a depleted side, I think we can give the Croatians a run for their money, and I’m conservatively expecting a score draw. Hopefully the boys can give us, and George Burley, that and a bit more on the day. Mon the Scots!
