Brazil 2 Scotland 0
Ideally the game would be the highlight of a Scotland trip to London. It wasn’t. The chant “We’re only here for the party” by the Tartan Army shortly after the 2nd conceded goal, a Neymar penalty, summed it all up. We had been outplayed the entire game, Brazil refusing to take their foot off the gas.
The actual highlight for me was meeting Jim Leighton, Joe Jordan and Alex McLeish. All 3 were absolutely top class gentleman. I got both Jim and Joe to sign my programme and take a photo with me, however I could only get Alex to shake my hand as he was going off to do some punditry for TV. I did manage to say to Alex McLeish “I’m surprised they let you in”. I meant this as a reference to the fact Birmingham beating Arsenal in the Carling Cup final, he took it as a reference to the fact he used to be Scotland manager before leaving us.
Apologies for that brief digression. The game was far from entertaining, with Scotland only having 2 shots on target. Brazil had fielded, somewhat worringly, a mostly second string team.
Neymar, however, looks a real star, slightly reminded me of Cristiano Ronaldo, thin, skilful, attacking, quick, agile, score goals. However he has a great quality Ronaldo doesn’t in that he will press the opposition and track back (not that he needed to do it much).
Time for some good news, Spain defeated the Czech Republic, a result we needed as the Czechs are already in a dominant position for 2nd. We need to win at Hampden in September.
